I even worked in the non-profit world for 10 years shooting documentary footage around the world as thousands and thousands of people received the gift of hearing through the Starkey Hearing Foundation. I was there, three feet away, when little girls turned to hear their mothers' voices for the first time. It was powerful. Heart warming. And then I got home and it was Tuesday and the heartstrings rang silent.
So here I am. 35. Just got married for the first (and last) time. Four insta-kids and a beautiful wife. I teach people to SCUBA dive and take them on trips to the most beautiful parts of our world, and I try to make a difference in my community by helping out local causes. The pieces of a life I'd been afraid to dream about are finally coming together. And all these pieces, on their own, are great. But on their own, it's not enough. It's the combination of them all, the balance of them all that helps me "Live • Deeper."
And that's why I started DYP™. To help me and others "Live • Deeper™." I don't think life can always be about "ME." And conversely, it can't always be about "THEM." We need relaxation and enjoyment to be the best "ME", and we need to think (and act) beyond ourselves to put others first to also be the best "ME."
I can teach you to dive. I can take you on a trip to paradise. And that will be amazing...for a while. But then we get home and it's Tuesday. And that's the pivotal moment. That's when instead of slumping back into the grind, I stand next to you and together we do something for someone. Someone close to us. Someone we can reach out and make a difference in their life.
Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can all do small things with great love.” Me, and DYP and You aren't setting out to raise millions of dollars. DYP's first campaign was for Place of Hope, a rehabilitation center and halfway house in Columbia, TN. We raised $810 dollars. Not millions. $810. But we bought them a new water heater.
So how did a SCUBA company get mixed up with a halfway house? Easy. I wanted to live deeper so I started this company, DYP™. I remembered this guy Kevin Riggs who used to come into the dive shop I used to manage. He was a pastor helping out the needy community in Franklin, TN. I told him I had a new company and asked if there was any way I could help him out. He said yes, gave me the numbers of three of his friends that were also doing great things in the community, and I called them as well. The next thing I know, I'm getting a tour of Place of Hope by Mike Coupe, the head honcho there, and 4 weeks later we finished our 30 day campaign for them. A month after that, we helped Kevin Riggs fund his Jobs For Life program, and each organization leads me to meet other great causes that need our help. The need out there is astounding. But the good news is there are amazing people like Kevin Riggs and Mike Coupe that are already out there making a difference. They just need a little help. That's where DYP™ comes in.
With your help, we can make a significant difference in peoples' lives. We've developed www.iLIVEDEEPER.com to help people create a live of adventure and service. I hope you'll have a look and get involved. If you have a campaign you'd like to launch, contact me. If I can help, great. Or if you just want to let me know how you're "living deeper," I'd love to hear about it. And as always, if you want to learn to dive or go diving somewhere amazing, DYP™ can hook you up!
